Why do I want to learn Japanese?

Heyo, Anjali here.

Learning Japanese, or at least the motivation to learn Japanese, has been a constant in my life. Both of my parents lived in Japan for a few years before I was born, and hearing their stories was always interesting to me. I found it crazy that my mom picked up Japanese quickly, using a guide she picked up in an airport. I still have her copy of that book and I've continued to skim through it, always wanting to learn how to speak, read, and write.

There was a point in high school when I got access to a tutor, but my speaking skills were really hard to improve on. Being in a class setting makes it more engaging and helpful (and also a lot more fun). The pace is fast, but reviewing every single day helps solidify the material. I'm really excited to start kanji, because I ended tutoring right before beginning work on it. It seems difficult but I'm sure I'll be able to learn eventually. I would also like to pursue East Asian Studies as a minor, because I am very interested in Japanese history. I watch anime and read manga as well. I'm also involved in Naginata (なぎなた), a Japanese martial art.

I'll keep learning and improving :D

  2. You remind me a little of my friend who started off as premed but is now a CS major and an EALAC minor. You sound so motivated, so I hope this class is everything you hoped for! Also, intro to East Asian history: Japan was a really interesting class if you're interested (or just want to get in a global core like I did).

    1. Ah really? (Also is your friend Katrina because I know someone that did exactly that haha). I actually really want to try that class next semester, thank you so much for the recommendation!

  3. Kanji is tough at first but it becomes easier as you learn the different components.
Even Japanese people think some kanji is really difficult until they take a closer look at it.
    Example: 勹 口 攵 言 乞 = 警

    Also, your mom sounds amaaaazing.

    1. That's very true! And I didn't notice that before but seeing how the kanji breaks down does make it a lot more approachable, thanks! :D
